SELECT YOUR CLASS

Rolling is the word for when you grapple each other. Here's where you do it. Tap a fighter to select.

Takedown practice on the mats

FUNDAMENTALS

Class: Beginner
  • Basics
  • Takedowns
  • Live rolling
  • Newbie safe

Basic positions of control on the ground and how to escape them. Some takedowns, because getting the fight to the floor is integral to ground fighting. Some submissions, but early on it's about getting it down and controlling someone safely.

Each class: small warm up, a few techniques, a short bit of live drilling or sparring. If you see more experienced grapplers in this class, that's because EVERYONE needs to brush up on their fundamentals.

COMPETITION

Class: Above beginner
  • Advanced
  • Sparring
  • Hard drills
  • Newbie safe

For grapplers above beginner level. Content changes depending on who has competitions coming up. More advanced techniques, more sparring rounds and harder live drilling.

Please do not come to these classes unless invited by an instructor or fellow student.

OPEN MAT

Class: Free roam
  • Freedom
  • Coach nearby
  • Set lesson
  • RoundsYOUR CALL

Freedom. Most people set the round timer and swap partners each round. Some do an endurance roll with one partner. Some try a new technique they saw on YouTube.

Nothing specific is taught but a coach is there for questions. To train light, organise it with a partner ahead of time and grab a spot on the edge of the mat.

P1 SELECTS: FUNDAMENTALS. GOOD CALL. JUST ROCK UP TO ONE.

HOW TO PLAY

Read the instruction card before you put your coin in. It's short. Mark wrote it.

TAP = TAP YOUR PARTNER
(REPEATEDLY, WITH YOUR HAND)
OR YELL "TAP"
LOUD ENOUGH TO BE HEARD

PRO TIP: DO BOTH.

There are chokes and joint locks. You can tap out at any time. The dummy learnt this the hard way.

  • LOADOUT

Shorts, a t-shirt you don't mind sweating in, and a good attitude. Some people use a mouthguard in case of accidental knocks.

  • STAMINA BAR

Be prepared to huff and puff. Your cardio will be tested regularly.

  • FALL DAMAGE

Takedowns mean hitting the mats. Mats are soft, but expect a few bumps and bruises. Same for everyone.

  • EVOLUTION

The first week you may feel like a wad of cookie dough... but after a year you will be carved from wood! If you're consistent.

  • CO-OP MODE

Nervous is normal. Bring a friend for your first few classes. After 2 or 3 classes you'll feel familiar with everyone. If there's someone you don't feel comfortable training with, you have every right to avoid them.

  • STINK DEBUFF

Come showered and clean. No one wants to grapple the stinky guy in class, make sure that's not you or you might find yourself partner-less when it comes time to roll!

  • SICK

Stay home. Come back when you're healthy. Your training partners thank you.

  • GRIND

Be consistent. Train as much as possible. That's the whole cheat code.
